Dear AMSCI member,
“They punch above their weight.”
Most of us are probably familiar with this now-common expression. It signals perseverance leading to achievement beyond expectation. Looking back on the ten years I have been privileged to lead this organization, I can say with confidence that this has always been our story. I can think of no better way to characterize the Institute. We have consistently met the defining challenges of the moment and will continue to do so.
In this regard, we place the highest priority on our mission to engage and inform. For instance, on three separate occasions over the past two years we prepared and submitted comments to U.S. Government agencies on regulatory matters deeply affecting the metals supply chain. Each one of these projects involved many hours of careful work and are now part of a permanent U.S. Government record. Most recently, in October 2023 we submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security on a proposed rule regarding Section 232 exclusions.
Keeping you up to date remains a key part of our mission. An example is the outstanding two-day webinar we presented in September 2023 exploring key topics regarding industry decarbonization. Recognizing that these developments will only grow in significance, in 2024 we will present updated sessions in this increasingly important area.
Our networking events also continue to be a top priority. Just weeks ago, we again returned to the Yale Club of New York City in Midtown Manhattan for our Annual Dinner Gala. I am happy to note that this popular year-end social gathering hit a post-COVID shutdown attendance record.
We are already planning for new events and activities in 2024, which we hope to start announcing soon.
In summary, we do a lot on a very tight budget. With that in mind, I would be grateful if you would permit me one final request for this year: I respectfully ask you to stay close to the heart of our mission by renewing your membership today.
With warmest New Year’s wishes,
Richard
